Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are drawing nearer each day. I invite my family and friends to Christmas lunch and Boxing Day, which gives me ample opportunity to show off my skills in the kitchen and make a fuss of everyone. Try one of these delicious British Christmas desserts to impress your family and guests this festive season; they deserve it.
The most popular Christmas dessert in the UK is the traditional Christmas pudding. This festive treat has been enjoyed by British families for centuries. Made with a mix of dried fruits, suet, spices, and other delightful ingredients, it's often served with a dollop of brandy sauce or custard. It's a cherished part of the British Christmas tradition.
Traditional British Christmas pudding is usually made weeks before Christmas (about six weeks ahead or more), saving you from making it in the crazy days before the holidays. Actually, a six week old pudding will be considered quite fresh. It is always steamed using a thick, ceramic bowl called a pudding basin, which gives it its distinctive shape. Once the dough is added to the bowl, it is tightly covered with parchment paper and foil tied with string. It is then steamed a large pan for 7 hours.
Christmas pudding is a sweet boiled or steamed pudding traditionally served as part of Christmas dinner in Britain. It has its origins in medieval England, with early recipes making use of dried fruit, suet, breadcrumbs, flour, eggs and spice, along with liquid such as milk or fortified wine. Later, recipes became more elaborate.
It is not baked, but steamed (to cook it and reheat it) and then doused with brandy and set alight before serving with brandy sauce or brandy butter. This is part of the Christmas dinner tradition in Britain. NB: Christmas puddings used to include a silver coin or trinket baked inside. The person who found it would supposedly have good luck come their way.
There is a popular myth that plum pudding's association with Christmas goes back to a custom in medieval England that the "pudding should be made on the 25th Sunday after Trinity, that it be prepared with 13 ingredients to represent Christ and the 12 apostles, and that every family member stir it in turn from east to west to honour the Magi and their journey in that direction". However, recipes for plum puddings appear mainly, if not entirely, in the 17th century and later.
In the late Victorian era 'Stir up Sunday' (the fifth Sunday before Christmas) began to be associated with the making of Christmas pudding. Once turned out of its basin, decorated with holly, doused in brandy (or occasionally rum), and flamed (or "fired"), the pudding is traditionally brought to the table ceremoniously, and greeted with a round of applause.
For the brandy sauce: Add the butter to a saucepan over medium heat. When melting and bubbling, stir in the flour. Slowly add the milk while stirring until there are no lumps, stir in the cream and sugar. Cook until thicken.
A traditional Christmas Cake has that classic fruit cake essence and luxurious, smooth texture that's both flavorful and delightfully moist. It is perfect to enjoy it on its own, or a dollop of custard or brandy sauce is always a welcomed addition! While typically, Christmas Cakes require a head start with dried fruit soaking overnight, this recipe breaks away from that tradition and is much faster to prepare. Which is always a bonus for busy cooks!
It's hard to picture Christmas without mince pies, and there's a good reason why! These little treats have been savored in the UK during the holiday season since way back in the 16th century. Back then, they were crafted from a mixture of spiced, sweet meat. However, nowadays, the more common version is made with sweet mincemeat-a blend of dried fruits, sugar, spices, and brandy (without the meat part). They're like a cherished piece of British Christmas dessert history.
Fun fact: Mincemeat pies used to contain meat for a sweet and savory filled tart but now are only sweet, made with dried fruits, nuts, and suet. Mince pies are a staple at any UK Christmas meal. You can make your own or buy them already made in packages of 4-12.
A traditional English trifle is made with sponge cake, custard, jelly, whipped cream and berries. This stunning-yet-simple dessert has been a favorite of the Brits for over 300 years. Trifles happen to be one of those desserts I absolutely adore because they're a breeze to whip up and even easier to serve - a win-win! They also look incredibly impressive as a dessert table centerpiece.
The sponge cake layers are given a little boost with limoncello and homemade lemon curd and then topped with fresh blueberries and a creamy lemon cheesecake filling. What's more, if you use a store-bought sponge then you don't even need to turn the oven on to make it.
This Sticky Toffee Pudding counts as part of my classic Christmas pudding collection - it's a dessert that feels like a warm, comforting hug! These soft cakes made with sweet brown sugar are soaked in a delicious toffee sauce, making them incredibly tasty and extra moist. You can have them warm with whipped cream or ice cream for that extra yum factor.
Traditional bread and butter pudding is also a very easy dessert to prep and bake, so it frees up a busy hostess for other things. Bread puddings are like an old-school dessert hack for using up leftover bread. This Bread and butter pudding made with pain au chocolat is an absolute showstopper when it comes to taste and texture. The French pastries soak up the easy custard underneath and go all crunchy on top; it is one of my most requested desserts.

The Yule log cake is one of those classic British desserts that is all about making a lasting impression! It's like creating a little magic step by step. First, you bake a cake, then add a yummy filling, roll it up, give it a frosty coat, and voilà! Whilst it can seem tricky to assemble, it's actually a lot easier to make than you might think.
Keep the chocoholics happy with a basic chocolate tart turned into an elegant and indulgent dessert to impress guests during Christmas time! Creating this velvety chocolate ganache tart is a breeze, but there are some helpful tricks in the recipe to simplify the process even further. Indulge in the luscious chocolate ganache tart and the amazing contrast of its crunchy, slightly bitter chocolate pâte sucrée crust.
A decadent, boozy, and chocolatey treat that is definitely for grown-ups only! I love serving these truffle torte bombs on a bed of whipped cream that looks like snow, and topped with fruit caviar and a dusting of powdered sugar.
Shortbread can be had any time of year of course, but at Christmas you need to have plenty around, preferably in festive shapes and packaged in a seasonal tin. There’s a super decadent shortbread recipe that's all about that rich clotted cream. And clotted cream is about as British as it gets. These clotted cream shortbread cookies are just the thing to munch on this Christmas, and they have the most incredible texture. Shortbread cookies are a fancy treat - yet they are a lot easier to make than you might think, and you only need five ingredients.
Scones are served at British afternoon tea, and this festive twist on classic British scones is one you'll definitely want to bring out this Christmas. Some of the milk in traditional scones has been replaced with brandy, and then there's mincemeat and balls of marzipan mixed in too. Spread with clotted cream and jam and pretend you're Queen Elizabeth II; it really is divine!
Creating an easy fruit galette right in your own kitchen is as simple as can be, and the result is a wonderfully flaky, buttery crust piled high with fruit filling that's just perfect! The best part is you can use whatever fruits you have available. This classic British treat carries a rustic charm, looks beautiful, and tastes seriously amazing - plus, the process of making it is an absolute breeze!
This warm blueberry cobbler is like a cozy hug in dessert form! You won't believe how quick and easy it is to whip up this scrumptious dessert that will conquer any sweet tooth. Whether you're using fresh fruit or frozen blueberries, this uncomplicated recipe brings together basic ingredients that you probably already have stashed away in the pantry. And all it needs to garnish is a bit of fresh cream poured over the top.
I hate Vanilla Ice Cream, said no one! With this luxurious vanilla flavor and silky-smooth frozen masterpiece, everyone will surely have a merry Christmas, as it goes with everything. This is one of those super easy British Christmas Desserts, as you only need 5 ingredients to make it. You could serve this alongside a Christmas crumble, bread and butter pudding, or any other festive dessert.
This no-churn ice cream is one of those easy elegant Christmas desserts that is so easy to serve on its own or with other dishes. Apples crop up in all British recipes, and this twist on a classic is one I am sure you'll love. I often serve it with sticky toffee pudding or apple pie.

Traditional British Christmas pudding is usually made weeks before Christmas (about six weeks ahead or more), saving you from making it in the crazy days before the holidays. The pudding is best when made ahead, way ahead. You can make the mix up to a year ahead as it just gets better with age. I like to make and steam the pudding about a week or so before Christmas Day. When it is cooled, wrap in parchment paper and a layer of foil and refrigerate. The night before you’re serving leave on the counter at room temperature, still wrapped.
